Montana Roja walk sketch map

Introduction/Start: This is a very easy and short walk climbing Montaña Roja. Montaña Roja or Red Mountain - aptly named. It is a volcanic crater which towers over Playa Blanca in the south of Lanzarote. You can lengthen the walk by starting at any point in Playa Blanca or along its lengthy promenade but I describe the shortest route. Easy and short the route maybe but it offers the opportunity for a complete circuit of a crater, superb views from its top of Playa Blanca, across to Fuerteventura and interesting volcanic rocks to see en route.

There is no shade or refreshment opportunities during the walk but you are not far from a beer afterwards!.

The walk starts from an urbanization to the west of Playa Blanca. To get there, turn west off the LZ2 on the northern outskirts of Playa Blanca at the roundabout with the filling station, following Faro de Pechiguera. At the third mini roundabout, turn right at the Jardines Del Sol (there is a small sign for Montaña Roja but it is not very prominent). Take the second on the left (there is a small sign for Montaña Baja). Continue along here and eventually you will see a small sign on the left “Al Volcan” and  “To The Volcano” (in English). Park here somewhere. You can see the obvious path ascending to the right of the volcano.

That is all you need. Just climb it! Walk round the crater and back to the car.
